DEFINITION

This field specifies the message number and where it is positioned in a chain of messages, or it specifies that it is the only message.

CODES

Total must contain one of following codes (Error code(s): T97):

LAST	This is the last message in a chain of messages.
MORE	More messages are following; this is not the last message in the chain of messages.
ONLY	This is the one and only message, ie, no chain of messages.

USAGE RULES

It is recommended that messages be sent in sequence.

All messages belonging to the same sequence must have exactly the same sender's reference in field 20.

When more than one message is needed to convey all information, this field chains different messages by specifying the sequence number in the total number of messages.
